Kentucky Treasurer’s Office Returns More Than $100 Million in Unclaimed Property, Continues Outreach in Lexington

Kentucky Treasurer Mark Metcalf’s office announced that it has returned more than $100 million in unclaimed property to residents across the Commonwealth since he took office in January 2024, a milestone the agency says represents the fastest pace of returns for any Treasury administration at this stage in Kentucky history.

According to the Treasurer’s Office, the funds returned to Kentuckians are part of the state’s unclaimed property program, which holds assets such as dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, utility deposits, and other funds that have been turned over to the state after owners could not be located.

Metcalf, a Garrard County native, has made expanding public awareness and increasing claims activity a priority during his tenure. Treasury officials say outreach efforts have helped connect more residents with property that rightfully belongs to them.

As part of those efforts, the Treasurer’s Office is bringing its unclaimed property roadshow to Lexington for a two-day event designed to help residents search for unclaimed funds and begin the claims process.

Officials estimate that Fayette County residents alone have approximately $45 million in unclaimed property that may be available for recovery.

The outreach event will be held June 23 and June 24 at the Davis Park Workforce Center, located at 501 De Roode Street in Lexington. Staff from the Treasurer’s Office will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day to assist residents with property searches and answer questions about filing claims.

The Treasurer’s Office encourages individuals to attend the event and determine whether they, family members, or businesses may have unclaimed assets being held by the state. Residents who locate property during the event can receive guidance on the documentation required to complete the claims process.

State officials say the Lexington stop is part of an ongoing effort to increase awareness of Kentucky’s unclaimed property program and return funds to their rightful owners.
