Eagles Defeat Garrard County Golden Lions 52-42
The Bethlehem Eagles outlasted the Garrard County Golden Lions 52-42 in an offensive showcase Friday night at Garrard County High School, handing the home team a setback in their final tune-up before district play begins.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind strong quarterback play from junior Jack Bradley and a punishing ground game led by 210-pound running back Jalen Del Valle. Bradley, who has thrown for nearly 700 yards in four games this season, connected with receivers Noah Hawkins and Thomas Mudd for key gains in the opening drive.
Garrard County answered back with two touchdowns from quarterback Justin Parsons. Parsons scored on short push runs from two yards out to tie the game 14-14 in the second quarter.
However, turnovers proved costly for the Golden Lions. A fumble late in the second quarter led to a Bethlehem touchdown, and a 65-yard fumble return for a score in the third quarter helped the Eagles build their largest lead of the night at 49-28.
The game's most exciting moments came in the fourth quarter. Trailing 49-34, Garrard County mounted a furious comeback attempt. Parsons connected with RJ Blair on a 49-yard touchdown pass, and the Golden Lions successfully recovered an onside kick to get the ball back.
A one-yard touchdown run by Parsons, followed by a successful two-point conversion, cut the deficit to 49-42 with 5:48 remaining, making it a one-score game.
However, Bethlehem's experience showed as they controlled the clock and added a 30-yard field goal to extend their lead to 52-42. Despite a valiant effort, Garrard County couldn't complete the comeback, turning the ball over on downs with 26 seconds remaining.
The loss drops Garrard County's record to 2-2 as they prepare to open district play next Friday night against Casey County on the road.
The high-scoring affair showcased two explosive offenses, with both teams combining for 94 points and demonstrating the exciting brand of high school football that draws communities together on Friday nights.
