Lancaster, KY (June 13, 2020 - 12:45PM) — The local health department confirmed three additional cases of COVID-19 on Saturday afternoon, before further investigation found that one of those reported cases was a resident of another county.

This brings the total number of cases in Garrard County to 12 since the beginning of the pandemic. Of those 12, six have been reported to have made full recoveries.

“Just as we expected to happen with reopening, Garrard County has been notified of three additional cases this morning,” the first statement from the Garrard County Health Department read.

According to Garrard County Judge Executive John Wilson, The first two were reported as a husband and wife who had both tested positive. The wife is 65, and the age of the husband was not provided. The third case was reported as a 78-year-old female. All three individuals were reported to be quarantined at home and doing well.

Soon thereafter, the health department revised their statement when one of the infected individuals was found to be resident of another county.

“Upon further investigation by Garrard County Health Department staff, one of our three cases confirmed this morning was found to be a resident of another county,” the follow-up statement read. “Therefore, a transfer of care has been turned over to the health department where the patient currently resides. Further investigation and contact tracing will be handled by that county’s health department staff. This currently brings Garrard County’s total COVID-19 case count to 12 residents.”

As with the other cases, further monitoring of close contacts is currently being conducted by the Garrard County Health Department staff.

Aside from the two new cases reported Saturday, earlier this week there was also one case confirmed on Thursday, three confirmed on Wednesday and one confirmed on Monday.

Thursday’s confirmed case was a 42-year-old female. She was said to be quarantined at home and doing okay. The three cases announced on Wednesday were 10, 13, and 15-years old and were also announced to be quarantined at home and doing fine. Monday’s case was also reported to be a 42-year-old female as well, and was also reported to be quarantining at home.

“So far, nearly 1,000 people in Garrard County have been tested, and we have only had [12] positive cases. At this time, we have had no reported deaths, only one was hospitalized, and six have recovered fully,” Wilson said.

“Obviously, this virus is still present in our community, and many areas are seeing an uptick in reported cases,” he added. “Health officials here believe this is due to increased testing, but the fact remains that we must continue to take appropriate precautions to limit the spread of this illness.”

The health department’s statement went on to ask that Garrard Countians take Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended measures to protect themselves and others from the spread of COVID-19.
