Golden Lions Fall to Madison Southern 35-7 in Season Opener at Death Valley Bowl

August 21, 2026  /  Ted Cox

Garrard County's Golden Lions dropped their 2026 season opener 35-7 to Madison Southern at the Death Valley Bowl in Lincoln County on Friday night.

Playing as part of a football doubleheader that also featured a Lincoln County matchup, Garrard County came in with a roster stocked with players making their first varsity appearances, a reality that showed early as Madison Southern's size and experience wore the Golden Lions down over four quarters.

Madison Southern struck first in the opening quarter on a 58-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gabriel Beard to receiver David McCoy, capping a drive that followed a Garrard County defensive stand on a mishandled Eagles snap. The extra point made it 7-0.

Garrard County's offense, led by sophomore quarterback Ryan Noe and sophomore running back Jacob Pendergrist, moved the ball steadily for much of the first half but was repeatedly pushed behind the chains by penalties and couldn't finish drives. An interception by Madison Southern's Brian Brock set up a short field that the Eagles converted into their second score, and Beard added his second touchdown pass of the half, a 30-yarder to Winkler, to make it 21-0 at the break.

Madison Southern extended the lead to 28-0 on a short touchdown run by Saurin DeShields to open the second half, then added another DeShields touchdown run later in the fourth quarter to push the score to 35-0.

Garrard County avoided the shutout in the closing minute, driving methodically behind Pendergrist, who fought through leg cramps throughout the night to punch in a 3-yard touchdown run with 31 seconds remaining. Freshman kicker Nate Sullivan added the extra point to make the final 35-7.

It was the first varsity touchdown for Pendergrist, who played both ways and battled cramping issues in the Kentucky heat,

Despite the lopsided final score, Garrard County's defense had moments of promise, particularly early. Linemen and linebackers including Syler Skeens, Sam Routt, Jonlem Teater and Duke Gaffney combined for several stops behind the line of scrimmage, and freshman defensive back Kasen Abney made a strong open-field tackle to close out the game. Garrard County dressed roughly 40 players compared to Madison Southern's 75-80; a major factor as the game wore on.

Garrard County finished last season 5-5 before falling in the first round of the playoffs. This year's roster leans heavily on underclassmen, with Spencer Crutchfield now in his fifth season at the helm.

Madison Southern head coach Tim Kirk, who once served as Garrard County's defensive coordinator on the program's lone regional championship team in 2011, picked up the win in his return to Death Valley Bowl.

Garrard County returns home next Friday to host Estill County.
