First Day of Waste Tire Collection Event Receives Positive Community Response

The Garrard County Waste Tire Collection event kicked off on Thursday, September 26, with a strong community response. The event, which runs through Saturday, September 28, is hosted at the State Highway Garage in Lancaster, located at 782 Industry Road. Hours for collection are from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Garrard County Judge Executive Chris “Roo” Elleman expressed satisfaction with the community's participation, noting that the first day of the event saw an excellent turnout. "We have two more days of the event, so please take advantage of it," Elleman stated, encouraging residents to make the most of the opportunity to dispose of their waste tires responsibly.

The event accepts a wide range of tires, including those for trucks, passenger vehicles, farm implements, bicycles, motorcycles, go-carts, and ATVs. Tires are accepted either on or off the rim, making it easier for participants to contribute to the tire disposal efforts.

However, certain types of tires will not be accepted. These include foam-filled, calcium-filled, and off-road construction tires, as well as tires with beads greater than 1¾ inches. Additionally, tires will not be accepted from retailers, recyclers, or salvage yards, as the event is primarily aimed at helping local residents dispose of personal waste tires.

The initiative is sponsored by the Kentucky Division of Waste Management and serves as an important step toward reducing environmental hazards associated with improperly disposed tires.
