Garrard County Set to Face Mercer County with District Title Hopes on the Line
Garrard County will travel to Mercer County in a pivotal matchup, seeking both their sixth consecutive victory and their first district championship since 2014. The game carries added significance for the Golden Lions, not only due to district implications but also because it revives a competitive rivalry in which Mercer County holds a 17-8 series advantage. Garrard County’s most recent triumph over Mercer County came two decades ago in 2004, when current Golden Lions head coach Spencer Crutchfield played a key role by passing for 211 yards and two touchdowns while adding 94 yards and a score on the ground in a thrilling 35-34 road victory.
The Golden Lions’ current five-game winning streak marks a potential return to the heights they last achieved in 2014. That season, Garrard County strung together six consecutive victories, capped off with a dominant 26-6 win over Western Hills, where Nick McCollum recorded four receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown to secure the district title.
This matchup against Mercer County also holds historical weight, as Garrard County has claimed only four district championships in its football history. The Golden Lions' first district title came in 1967, sealed with a 21-0 shutout of Frankfort, which was highlighted by Barry Davis' electrifying 85-yard kickoff return to open the second half. Garrard County’s second title arrived in 1993, with a memorable 13-12 victory over Harrodsburg on the same field where they will compete this week. In that game, Sheldon Burnside’s 30-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run secured the win. The program’s most recent district success came in 2011 under the leadership of current assistant principal Mark Scenters. That season featured several memorable moments, including a 35-34 overtime win at Bourbon County, where quarterback Billy Abney connected with Tyler McCoy for a game-winning touchdown pass.
However, history favors Mercer County in recent years. The Titans have won the last six meetings between the two teams, extending their all-time series lead to 17-8. For Garrard County to reverse that trend, they will need to channel the resilience and playmaking that have defined some of their most iconic wins in program history.
Mercer County, which consolidated in 1955, did not field a football team until 1961. Garrard County’s history with the Titans' predecessors includes two notable victories in 1962 and 1963. In the latter contest, Roy Ray’s dual-threat performance, with both a rushing touchdown and a receiving score from Scotty Simpson, gave Lancaster High a 14-7 win—marking the final football game in Lancaster High’s history before it merged into Garrard County.
As the Golden Lions look to break both Mercer County's recent dominance and their nearly decade-long district title drought, the stage is set for a compelling showdown. A victory for Garrard County would not only end a 20-year losing streak against the Titans but also mark the culmination of a remarkable resurgence under head coach Spencer Crutchfield.
