Garrard County Seeks Fifth Straight Win Against Marion County in District Showdown
Garrard County is set to face off against Marion County at home tonight, aiming to extend their winning streak to five games and improve their record at their new stadium to a perfect 4-0. The Golden Lions, who have dominated the series with Marion County, hold an 11-2 lead all-time, winning the last eight meetings between the two teams. Marion County’s last victory in the series came over four decades ago, in 1978.
Garrard County’s current form has been impressive, with the team looking to capture its first district championship in ten years. This week's game is particularly significant as it offers the Golden Lions a chance to strengthen their bid for the title. A victory would also mark their fourth consecutive home win, a feat they haven’t achieved since the 2013 season. In that year, Garrard’s fourth straight home win came during a decisive first-round playoff game against Lewis County, where quarterback Slade Crutchfield threw for 250 yards and five touchdowns, leading the team to a 43-13 victory.
The last time Garrard hosted Marion County was in 2002, during the season opener. In that high-scoring contest, the Golden Lions triumphed 53-41, powered by standout performances from Dontae Logan and Montice Quisenberry. Logan rushed for 118 yards and four touchdowns, while Quisenberry contributed 119 yards on the ground and scored twice, also adding a punt return touchdown.
The history of football matchups between Garrard County and Marion County dates back decades. Marion County, established in 1970 after the consolidation of Lebanon, St. Augustine, and St. Charles High Schools, has rarely gotten the better of Garrard in their meetings. While Garrard County never faced any of the predecessor schools, Lancaster High, a former team in the area, did. Lancaster met Lebanon five times in the 1920s, winning four of those games. One of their victories, a 54-0 blowout in 1921, took place on Armistice Day following a parade honoring World War I veterans.
Lancaster High also faced St. Augustine twice in the early 1950s, winning both matchups. In the 1951 game at Leavell Field, Joe Pollard and Cabel Leavell led the Green Devils to a 14-0 victory, with Pollard scoring on a 45-yard run and Leavell punching in from three yards out.
As Garrard County gears up to face Marion County once again, they will be looking to extend their series dominance and maintain their winning momentum. Marion, meanwhile, will be seeking to break a long drought against the Golden Lions and turn the tide in a series that has been decidedly one-sided for decades. With district stakes on the line and a deep historical backdrop, this Friday night matchup promises to be a pivotal one for both programs.
