Kentucky State Police Urge Drivers to Be Cautious During Peak Deer Season
As autumn blankets Kentucky with cooler temperatures and vibrant fall foliage, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) have issued an important reminder for motorists across the Commonwealth: fall is the peak season for deer-related vehicle accidents.
KSP reports that last year saw a concerning 3,285 deer-related crashes in Kentucky, resulting in 202 injuries and three fatalities. These sobering statistics highlight the need for heightened caution, especially during this time of year.
The KSP is advising all Kentuckians to be especially alert as they navigate through deer-prone areas this fall. In an effort to prevent further accidents and save lives, the agency has issued the following reminders:
Be Aware: Motorists are urged to stay vigilant and watch for deer crossing signs, which often signal areas where deer are likely to be present.
Slow Down: Reducing speed in deer-prone zones can give drivers more time to react, potentially avoiding a collision.
Never Veer From Deer: Sudden swerves or sharp turns to avoid a deer can have dangerous consequences. KSP emphasizes that these maneuvers could place drivers in the path of oncoming traffic or cause them to hit a tree or utility pole.
Buckle Up: In the unfortunate event that a collision with a deer is unavoidable, hitting the deer is often safer than attempting to swerve. Wearing a seatbelt remains the best defense against injury during a crash, and it is the law in Kentucky.
The KSP also emphasizes the importance of following these tips to ensure the safety of both motorists and wildlife. They are urging drivers to remember that vigilance can save lives, especially during the fall months when deer are more active and likely to be near roadways.
As the season progresses, Kentucky drivers are encouraged to remain cautious, adhere to speed limits, and keep safety at the forefront of their minds, especially in rural or wooded areas. With increased awareness and precaution, motorists can help reduce the number of deer-related incidents and ensure a safer season for everyone on the road.
