Garrard Set to Host Elizabethtown in Postseason Opener
Garrard County High School will open its postseason campaign this Friday at home, hosting Elizabethtown in a first-round matchup that carries significant historical weight and competitive stakes. The Elizabethtown Panthers, a dominant force with a 3-0 all-time series lead over Garrard County, defeated the Golden Lions 23-0 in their last encounter during the playoffs' first round in 2022. All previous meetings between the two teams have occurred in the postseason, underscoring the intensity of their playoff rivalry.
The upcoming game marks Garrard County’s 31st state playoff appearance, with a historical record of 21 wins and 30 losses in playoff contests. The Golden Lions' best postseason achievement was reaching the Class 3A semifinals in 2011, highlighting the team’s ambition for a deeper playoff run this year. Elizabethtown, meanwhile, is one of Kentucky’s more experienced playoff teams, making its 41st postseason appearance. The Panthers boast a strong playoff record, having finished as state runners-up five times, most recently in 2020. Their lone state championship came in 1969, when they triumphed over Bryan Station in the Class AA championship.
Garrard County, however, is bringing a notable advantage into this year's contest: a five-game home winning streak. A win against Elizabethtown would extend that streak to six, a feat that would rank as the sixth-longest in the school’s history. Additionally, a victory would secure Garrard County its eighth win of the season, placing this year’s team among the top nine winningest in the program's history.
Despite its record against Elizabethtown, Garrard County holds a respectable 17-11 record in first-round games since the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) established its current playoff structure in 1991. The Lions, however, have not won an opening-round playoff game since 2017, when they secured a narrow 20-14 win at Fleming County. That game, marked by a standout 195-yard rushing performance from Josh Warren, remains fresh in the memory of Golden Lions fans hoping for another strong showing on the ground this Friday.
In addition to being their 20th home playoff game, this matchup will be the first postseason contest held in Garrard County’s new stadium, an opportunity to establish a winning tradition in the new venue. Historically, the Golden Lions have found success at home in the playoffs, with a 14-5 record in postseason games held on their home field. This legacy includes a memorable first-round victory over Campbellsville in 1991, where Keith Leavell’s 220-yard, two-touchdown performance led the team to a 28-21 victory. Garrard County went on to achieve an 11-game home playoff winning streak from 1993 to 2011, capped by a regional final victory over Powell County, when Corey Wilson and Markell Hayes combined for over 300 rushing yards, securing the team’s first regional championship.
The last home playoff victory for the Golden Lions came a decade ago in a high-scoring 52-36 game against West Carter, led by a powerful 289-yard, three-touchdown effort from Jacob Foley. As the Lions prepare to host Elizabethtown, they will look to replicate this level of offensive production and defensive resilience to advance past the first round.
While Elizabethtown enters Friday’s game with the confidence of an undefeated series record against Garrard County, the Golden Lions aim to leverage their home-field momentum and longstanding playoff experience to reverse past results. The game promises to be a clash of history and ambition, with both teams eyeing a place in the next round of Kentucky’s competitive high school football playoffs.
