Garrard Middle Suffers First Loss Of Season In State Tournament, Ashland Moves Forward

In a competitive second-round clash of the Kentucky Middle School Football Association playoffs, the Ashland Tomcats traveled to Dyehouse Stadium and emerged victorious, defeating the previously unbeaten Garrard County Cougars 22-12. Both teams displayed resilience, strategy, and athletic prowess, making for a memorable game that highlighted the future of Kentucky football.

The game opened with the Cougars asserting their run-heavy offense, led by standout eighth-grader Jacob Pendegrist. After a methodical drive, Garrard County found the end zone on a short run by quarterback Ryan Noe, taking a 6-0 lead. The Tomcats, however, responded with quick adjustments and a balanced attack. Quarterback Tanner Stutler showcased his dual-threat abilities, leading Ashland down the field with precision and speed. Despite a missed conversion, Ashland tied the game 6-6 before halftime.

In the second half, Ashland's offensive versatility became a defining factor. Jaylan Strader's explosive 55-yard touchdown run gave the Tomcats their first lead of the game, and Stutler’s poise under pressure continued to trouble Garrard’s defense. The Cougars struggled to contain Stutler, whose improvisational plays turned broken situations into positive yardage.

With Ashland leading 14-6, Garrard County mounted a promising drive, spearheaded by Pendegrist’s powerful running and Noe’s smart decision-making. However, Ashland's defense stiffened when it mattered most, forcing a turnover on downs deep in their territory.

Late in the fourth quarter, Stutler delivered the game’s defining moment with a 22-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-two, extending Ashland's lead to 22-6. The Cougars refused to quit, with Noe leading a late touchdown drive capped by a connection to Lucas Eldridge. However, a missed two-point conversion left Garrard trailing by 10 points with little time remaining.

The Tomcats recovered the ensuing onside kick, sealing their 22-12 victory and advancing to the next round. Stutler’s performance, both as a passer and a runner, stood out as the key difference in a contest between two evenly matched teams.

Despite the loss, the Cougars' 13-1 season is a testament to their talent, teamwork, and preparation.

The game was a showcase of high-level middle school football, featuring standout individual performances and spirited efforts on both sides. Ashland’s balanced offense, coupled with Garrard’s physicality and heart, made for a thrilling afternoon of football that highlighted the depth of talent within Kentucky's youth leagues.

With the win, the Tomcats advance further in the Kentucky Middle School Football Association playoffs, continuing their pursuit of a state title. Meanwhile, Garrard County’s future looks bright, with a strong core of athletes ready to transition into the high school ranks.

As the dust settles, both teams can take pride in their performances. For Ashland, the journey continues, while Garrard County looks ahead with optimism, knowing they have laid a solid foundation for years to come.
