Correction

In last week’s A Way Back 50 Years Ago,  the week of  September 3, 1970,  in the obituaries: Sammie Kathleen Sebastian’s name was misspelled as  Sammie Katherine Sebastian. 

We apologize for the mistake as it was printed incorrect in the  September 3, 1970 paper. 

95 YEARS AGO

September 10, 1925 - Logan’s Chapel Honor Roll - Joetta Tyree, Ethel Tyree, John S. Tudor, Christine Conley, Oma Todd, Lillian Tussey, Elizabeth Conley, Cecil Conley, Bertha Tyree, Elizabeth Lester, Ada Whittaker and Mae Vaughn.

September 10, 1925 - The Bryantsville school opened Monday with bright prospects for a successful year. Mr. Coleman Reynolds, principal; Miss Alice Sutton, intermediate teacher; Miss Roberta Ray, the primary teacher.

September 10, 1925 - The United States Department of Agriculture sounds a word of caution to farmers in its current crop reports.

The warning is that the high prices for farm products are not due to increased demand but to under production brought about by poor crops.

90 YEARS AGO

September 11, 1930 - Garrard’s 4-H Judging Team, under the tutelage of county farm agent, R.B. McClure, won second prize in the judging contest at the State Fair last week competition with teams from 24 other counties.

Members of the team were Ed Arnold, Paint Lick; Eugene Sharp, Bryantsville; and W. C. Blakeman, Buena Vista.

September 11, 1930 - Mrs. J.E. Dickerson sent to this office in monstrosity, known as the Florida Guinea Bean, which she raised on her place in this city.

It very much resembles a baseball bat and about the same weight. It measures 36 inches in length, 12 inches in circumference at lower end and 7 inches at top. It’s a curiosity around here. Take a glance at it in our window.

September 11, 1930 - Sunday afternoon, twenty girls of the teen age, of the Christian Church Sunday School were organized into a Triangle Club corresponding with the Mission Band for Children and Women’s Missionary Society for the church.

The officers elected were: Elizabeth Alstrop, president; Katherine Aldridge, vice president; Edwina Edwards, literary secretary; Dorothy Crutchfield, secretary; Frances Tucker, treasurer; Mrs. Charles Roe, adviser.

70 YEARS AGO

September 14, 1950 - Practically every paper that one has read for the past two weeks remarked: the headlines tell about how the farmers are suffering on account of the coke shortage.

September 14, 1950 - Early Wednesday morning, approximately 2:30 a.m. to be exact, a few people of Lancaster and Garrard County were startled to find an enormous light from the sky had lightened up their room or yard with a bright yellow glow that was very intense. The early morning news report announced that the meteor had fallen near the Kentucky and Tennessee line.

September 14, 1950 - Hey Kids! Here is your opportunity to appear on the screen at the Grand Theatre, just like real movie stars. All children between the ages of three months and five years inclusive are invited to have their pictures taken at Elliott’s Hardware Store on September 19th.

60 YEARS AGO

September 15, 1960 - Obituaries: Inez West Rainey, 92; William A. Henderson, 79; Maggie Scott, 89.

September 15, 1960 - According to Mr. J.W. Marsee Garrard County School Superintendent, the following number of students are enrolled at the named schools.

Camp Dick Robinson - 365; Buckeye - 216; Paint Lick - 373; Buena Vista School - 56; West Point - 34; Wren’s View - 122; Gabbard School - 24; Oakdale School - 20; Davistown School - 16. 

A grand total of 1226 students are enrolled in the county school system.

September 15, 1960 - Total enrollment in the City School System (Lancaster and Mason schools) is some 752 pupils according to Mr. Stanley Marsee, Superintendent.

September 15, 1960 - The Lancaster Motor Company recently became the property of new owners. The property was purchased by Mr. Pete Gleich and Mr. Jim Sinderlar of Wisconsin.

Mr. Sindelar has operated a Chevrolet dealership in Cumberland, KY with 25 years experience in dealing with this brand of automobile. He and Mrs. Sindelar have purchased the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Dennis at 212 Lexington Street.

September 15, 1960 - In the opening game for each team, the Colts from Jessamine County defeated Lancaster 6-0 here Friday night on Leavell Field. The Devils, with only one regular from last year’s team showed a surprising amount of power.

September 15, 1960 - The Kentucky Cleaner will be open for business Monday morning, September 19, according to an announcement made by the owner, Mr. John Mason. The new cleaners will feature a one-hour service.

September 15, 1960 - The red waste paper and trash barrel in front of the Post Office is being abused. It is for dry paper and trash only. Many people are depositing whiskey bottles, beer cans, dead chickens, cans of grease, garbage and other matter that causes odor in the area.

September 15, 1960 - Eddie Montgomery and Jimmy Sanders were selected by their Jamboree Leader of the Boy Scouts of America to attend the State Fair Camporee.

September 15, 1960 - Participating in the ceremonies of the Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new General Telephone Company of Kentucky building in Lancaster were Fredrick C. Rahdert, president of General Telephone Co. of Kentucky, Earl Marshbanks, president of Lancaster Kiwanis Club, F.D. Elliott, Mayor of Lancaster, J.W. Marsee, representing the Garrard County Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club and Paul Wilson, Judge of Garrard County. The new building will cost approximately $53,000 and will be completed next June.

September 15, 1960 - Bryan Wilmot is another Garrard County farmer  who considered his tobacco crop a total loss when hit by the recent hail storm.

50 YEARS AGO

September 10, 1970 - Obituaries: Magdalene Humphrey Prewitt, 57; Charlie Ross, 89; James Paul Sanders, 40.

September 10, 1970 - Emit Long III, 13, was named state champion in the junior division of 4-H horticulture demonstrations in competition held Saturday, August 22 at the Kentucky State Fair.

September 10, 1970 - Bobby and Mitchell Hayes enjoyed the smiling hospitality of Sister M. Pat Sullivan at the opening of the Christian Appalachian Project’s Mini-Barn on Stanford Street. The new Lancaster enterprise serving dairy products and light lunches was staffed by volunteers to get started and now employs two local people.

September 10, 1970 -  Airman Polmer W. Burke has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, TX. He has been assigned to Sheppard AFB, TX, for training in aircraft maintenance. 

September 10, 1970 - Airman James B. Allen of Paint Lick has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, TX. He has been assigned to Sheppard AFB, TX for training in the transportation field. 

September 10, 1970 - Robert M. Burnside is one of 1410 freshman cadets who have entered the U.S. Air Force Academy class of 1974.

Cadet Burnside was accepted into the cadet wing after completing seven weeks of basic training, including field training at a simulated frontline combat base near the academy, strenuous physical conditioning and survival instruction.

September 10, 1970 - Two Garrard County youths and three Garrard adults were arrested and arranged before Garrard County Judge Ray Wilson for two charges of breaking and entering. The two places entered were the Wm. R. Teater and Company on Stanford Road and the John Ed Naylor home on Buckeye Road.

Approximately $300 worth of tools were taken from the Teater business and small, mostly antique items were taken from the Naylor home. Ninety-five percent of the stolen property has been recovered and returned to the owners.

September 10, 1970 - The all new 1971 Ford Pinto will be on display Friday, September 11th at Powell-Hester Motor Company on Richmond Street.

September 10, 1970 - Mr. Jim Sindelar and Mr. Pete Gleich, owners of Lancaster Motors, invites the public to the 1971 Vega showing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10th, 11th and 12th.

September 10, 1970 - Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Murphy, of Lexington, Kentucky announce the birth of a son, born August 4, at the St. Joseph Hospital. They have chosen the name Joel Jackson.

40 YEARS AGO

September 25, 1980 - Obituaries: Homer T. Lyen, 88; Robert (B.) Clark, 95; Martha Bush Metcalf, 69; Nell Cole Taulbee, 68; Lloyd F. “Bud” Oakes, Jr., 22; Lillie Baker Eason, 85; Martha L. Burton, 51; Stuart H. Reynolds, Sr., 57.

September 25, 1980 - When the stores open in Lancaster at 9 a.m. the merchants and customers find the Public Square neatly swept by - the “Invisible Man” of course.

Who is this man who begins early in the morning sweeping the Public Square and one block on each of the four streets that led from the Square?

He is John (Jake) Pinson, age 72, who sweeps the same area seven days a week. Pinson, who is employed by the City of Lancaster, was retired four years ago by the City, but his retirement only lasted one week when he was called back on the job.

September 25, 1980 - Miss Sandy Wells, “Miss Wheelchair Kentucky” was one of the highlights of the Tobacco Festival parade.

September 25, 1980 - Candidates for Homecoming Queen at Garrard County High School are: Sherry Long,  Ann Bolton,  Gina Singleton, Lisa Perkins and Tina Collier.

Homecoming attendants are Paula Dailey, Vickie Asberry and Faith Feldman.

September 25, 1980 - Bobby J. Powell and Edward L. Sherman were elected on September 16th to fill two newly created openings on the Board of Directors of The National Bank of Lancaster.

September 25, 1980 - Samuel Watkins and Kevin Day have been elected to membership in the American Angus Association.

September 25, 1980 - Guy Watkins, a professional checker player, received the winning ribbon in the Checker Contest Saturday morning. His opponent, Arthur Collins was runner-up. A nice crowd of checker players gather to watch the final game.

This years contest was held at Brummett-Todd Barber Shop where Guy is a barber.

September 25, 1980 - Three young Garrard County women are among the 306 students who registered for the fall semester at Midway College. They are Julie D. Quinn, Stephanie Sue Barber and Annette Simpson.

September 25, 1980 - Tobacco Festival float winners: Mr. Ron Bowman, Agriculture Instructor and members of the FFA, Garrard County High School, rode the winning float, with the theme “Tobacco - A Golden Past - A Brighter Future.” 

30 YEARS AGO

September 13, 1990 - Obituaries: Anna Lee Powell Smith, 91; Denver Adams, 49; Louis W. Conn, 57; Josephine Beasley Kelly, 69.

September 13, 1990 - The Buckeye Fire Department Board of Directors appointed the following officers at their meeting on September 4, 1990 at the fire station.

Chief - Johnnie King; Assistant Chief - Billy Moore; Captain - Jerry Shockley; Training Officer - Steve Casey; Lieutenant - Bill Walker; Head Mechanic - Lonnie Gipson; Secretary - Billy Moore; Assistant Secretary - Steve Casey.

September 13, 1990 - Serg. Daryl Woodrum, 28, son of Mrs. Mildred (Millie)  Manuel, owner and operator of the Hamilton Avenue Grocery in Lancaster, has a very rare talent.

Serg. Woodrum is an interpreter in the U.S. Army 519th Military Intelligence, and is one of only a half-dozen American soldiers who speak fluent Iraqi Arabic.

September 13, 1990 - Garrard County High School was vandalized sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning. Assistant Principal Kenny Hurt discovered the graffiti covered walls and floors early Saturday morning.

Dr. William C. Wesley said the vandal or vandals damaged the doors to the agriculture room and art room and painted the walls and floors of the hallway running east/west with obscene words, vulgar pictures, and threatening remarks about school personnel. After their rampage through the hallways the remainder of the paint was splashed on the walls.

September 13, 1990 - Radar Specialist Wallace Frank Hatcher of the 24th Infantry Division left three weeks ago for overseas.

September 13, 1990 - Mr and Mrs. Billy W. Lane of Lancaster and Virginia Goins of Indiana announce the upcoming marriage of daughter Kimberly to McKinley Dailey, son of Paul and Nerva Dailey of Lancaster.

The wedding is planned for September 22, 1990 at the Hyattsville Baptist Church at 3:30 p.m.

September 13, 1990 - Mr. and Mrs. Richard Oakley received a call from their son, Marine Corporal Jeffrey Oakley, that he had reached Saudi Arabia and was doing fine. He is flying with Athene’s media by helicopter.

September 13, 1990 - Miles Daniel (Danny) Goff left for his Navy Basic Training in Orlando, Florida, September 5, 1990.

September 13, 1990 - Cecil and Betty Bolin Dean celebrated their 29th Wedding Anniversary on September 9th. They were married September 9, 1971 in Danville, KY by the Rev. Henry C. Hedgespeth.

September 13, 1990 - The GTE Phone Mart, located at 108 East Richmond in Lancaster, will close at the end of business on Friday, September 14th.  The closing is necessary to control costs.

Customers will be able to pay their GTE telephone bills and drop off rental telephones at Wilson’s Foodtown, 136 Pleasant Retreat Plaza.

September 13, 1990 - Sparks were flying at Bennett R. Lewis Field at Washington County High School in Springfield Friday long before the electrical storm that halted the game began. Two good football teams were going at each other hot and heavy. Washington County had several key players return from the 1989 team that made the playoffs. The Lions were aiming to prove they could not only hold their own but defeat the AA school.

Garrard County was on the Washington County’s 27 with a first down at 8:26 left in the half. A streak of lightning danced in the distant sky. That’s when the official halted the game.

It is a shame that weather interfered. A good game had developed between two good teams. The game will neither count as a win or a loss.

September 13, 1990 - John Penman and his 10 year old grandson, Cecil Byrd, caught a 64-1/2 lb. catfish while fishing in Casey Creek at Green River. Penman landed this huge fish with the assistance of Jack Meadows.

20 YEARS AGO

September 14, 2000 - Obituaries: Coleman Lowry, 68; Mary Rebecca Embry, 83; Richard Lee Crowley, 70.

September 14, 2000 - One of Garrard County’s largest manufacturing firms is now under new ownership.

Garrard Wood Products, formerly, Garrard County Woodworking Products, is now owned by Brya Uittenbogaard of Lexington.

Uittenbogaard said he has no experience in the woodworking business, but “I’ve been in manufacturing all my life.”

Previously, he has worked in the manufacturing of construction equipment, refrigeration and forklifts.

September 14, 2000 - The Lancaster City Council on Monday night unanimously voted to leave the addresses the same as they are now.

The vote has no affect on address changes in the county outside the city limits.

September 14, 2000 - The biggest worry the Garrard County High School Marching Band had Saturday night was how would they get all the trophies they won at the Casey County Marching Classic back home, especially the six-foot-tall Reserve Grand Champion trophy.

In only their second competition this season the Golden Lions won Over-All Reserve Grand Champion out of 14 other bands, won the Mayor Trophy for best in their division, won best in their class and won best percussion in their class. 

“But best of all they received a Distinguished Rating,” qualifying them for the state marching band competition at the end of the season.

September 14, 2000 - For the first time this season the Garrard County Golden Lions enjoyed the sweet taste of Victory! It had an Eagle flavor, the Madison Southern variety.  The feating took place at Williams Stadium just outside of Berea. That thud heard around Garrard County around bedtime Friday was the sound of a gigantic monkey sliding off the backs of the Lions immediately following their 45-21 win that broke a three game losing streak to open the season.

September 14, 2000 - Persistence paid off for Gilbert Edgington Thursday when he won the 19th Annual Garrard County Tobacco Cutting World Championship.

The Mount Hebron farmer has competed in all but one of the 19 competitions, finishing in the money most of the time but never taking that top spot.

“I’ve finished second so many times I can’t remember the count,” said Edgington, who finished second last year to his brother Alan.

More than 500 attended the cutting contest held this year on the Cartersville farm of Marvin Conn.

September 16, 2010 - Obituaries: Elsie Virginia Anderson, 83; Raymond Nelson Lyons, 80; Virgie Gravett, 101; Elizabeth Pauline Denny, 70; Richard “Dickie” Miles, 75; Jack Wendt, 66.

September 16, 2010 - Kentucky Historic Highway Marker #2327 at the First Baptist Church on Paulding Street was unveiled by the eldest members of the congregation at First Baptist -  Mae Anderson, Cecil Dunn and Walter Williams, at an event held this past Saturday. Dignitaries attending the event included Arnie Akers of the Garrard Historical Society, Dr. Robert Blythe, Judge Executive John Wilson, US Congressman Ben Chandler, Walter Williams, Pastor David McPherson and State Representative Lonnie Napier.

September 16, 2010 - Garrard County Economics Development Director Nathan Mick and the Lancaster/Garrard Industrial Development Authority (IDA) announce Performance Feeds LLC and Performance Animal Health LLC (Performance Feeds and Animal Health) will open its Kentucky Feed Distribution Center and retail facility in Garrard County.

September 16, 2010 - Taking over at Bluegrass 911 about a year-and-a-half ago was not at all an easy spot for Russ Clark, the current Director of Bluegrass 911, serving Garrard and Lincoln counties. However after steering the ship as best he could as captain and avoiding treacherous obstacles, such as mass accumulated debt and tax fee accumulated by the previous director of Lincoln’s 911 operation, Clark has reached calmer waters and can take a breath and enjoy moments like last week, when he was named Communication Director of the Year by the Association of Public Communications Officials.

September 16, 2010 - Cancer survivors Ryan Scherbing, Lindsey Meadows and Austin Sebastian participated in the annual Lexington walk “Light Up The Night Walk” along with a team of 30-strong family members, friends and supporters.

September 16, 2010 - Finalists Tommy and Gwen Mitchell, owners of Rocky Top Log Furniture, Lancaster, and business associates were recognized at the 2010 Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards (EIEA) program on September 13 at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset for their nomination in the For-Profit Business category.

September 16, 2010 - The 101st Airborne, or the “Screaming Eagles,” is an organization that is rich in history. Formed during World War II and participating in the landing on Normandy Beach on D-Day, well-trained forces have shown courage under fire and selfless acts in the most hostile of situations since the inception of the division. Many have even given their lives for this country. On Monday the Garrard Fiscal Court helped to show their support for the historic fighting force by becoming the 37th of Kentucky’s 120 counties to fly the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagle” flag over the courthouse.

September 16, 2010 - Junior Cory Wilson ran for 151 yards on 24 carries and Garrard County racked up 304 yards rushing but maybe more importantly the Golden Lion defense held the Estill County running game under three hundred yards while forcing five fumbles and recovering four in a big 27-21 Homecoming win Friday night.

September 16, 2010 - Haley Elizabeth Meadows was crowned Garrard County Homecoming Queen at halftime of Garrard’s Friday night game with Estill County. She was escorted by Chase Ballard and crowned by 1985 Homecoming Queen Stephanie Montgomery. The class of 1985 was holding its 25th reunion over the weekend and Mrs. Hodge crowned the queen in place of 2009 Queen Faith Ayres who is attending college in Florida.
